Why is the nuggets ahead of the lakers in the standings?

yea I'm not an ignorant basketball fan, I know its because there the best in there division.. but then why are the dallas mavericks ahead of the nuggets, when there NOT leading there division?? something doesnt seem right to me.. can someone clear it up?
