What did gandhi do in his life?

He was a lawyer in south Africa. He then retruned to India and led a campaign of non violent nonco-operation in an effort to dissuade the British to leave India. He was famous for his hunger strikes and his role was more inspirational than anything else, but his vision of a united India after independence was subverted by the Muslim league under Jinner who wanted a separate country. Credited with bringing about Independence the reality was that Britain was finished after being crippled by the Second World War (independence was a condition of obtaining help from the Indian army) than from a slight, if charismatic, figure in a dhoti.
