Another occasion is after the Ambuscade of the A-rabs. The gang waits for the arrival of the “A-rabs” because Tom told them to. When the “A-rabs” do not come, he invents an outrageous story about how genies had turned A-rabs into children. He also tells them that “it was all done by enchantments…magicians had turned the whole thing into an infant Sunday-school, just out of spite.” Tom’s superstitions and high beliefs in romanticism affect his abilities to accept and live in reality.
